Following the CIPD Northern Area Partnership Conference in York, Richard Phillips writes:

MOL were proud to support The 2014 CIPD Northern Area Partnership Conference on 6 and 7 June both as an exhibitor and attending the workshops and presentations: The theme of the event this year was – “The BUSINESS of HR…making a difference “

The sessions at the event included “Influencing in your Organisation” delivered by Beth Curl & Stella Collins and the hugely entertaining and motivational “How to create magic in the workplace each & every time”  presented by Nigel Risner.

So how can HR make a difference? Peter Cheese Chief Executive, CIPD stated,

““We’re coming out of a recessionary period, but there’s still a lot of uncertainty about. We need to look at how we engage our workforces.

“There are so many issues we need to address, like youth unemployment, workforce engagement, recruiting on attitude, rescaling, up scaling – all of which mean that HR needs to play a much more prominent role."

Peter shared a ‘framework for future of HR and people development’ looking at

  • Insight on changing context
  • Business, Commercial insight and analytics
  • Science of human and organisational behaviour

He went on to discuss how alignment and engagement are critical for a high-performance workforce: Organisations need to recruit for attitude (being really clear on the attitude they want), not just qualifications. HR has too much data, not enough information – they need to have agreed definitions of some key measures (e.g. headcount!) and get better at insight, not just data. HR is a key enabler, but developing managers is critical – HR needs constant reminders of this.

The conference also provided opportunity to network with fellow HR professional and CIPD members and was set in the spectacular location of York Racecourse.
