Millie’s story: Getting a head-start on a HR career with MOL

Millie Parsons is still studying her CIPD Level 5 Intermediate Certificate in Human Resource Management but learning with MOL has already had a major impact on her career.

Millie graduated from Keele Universitywith a First Class Honours Degree in History and International Relations, having also gained a Certificate in Advanced Language Competence in German.

Originally from Cornwall, she found it difficult to get the experience she needed to start her career in HR:

“Once I left university, the only work experience I had managed to get was seasonal waitressing roles. I had worked for my father’s business as a receptionist and did some data entry throughout my studies at university, but companies were looking for something more.”

Having taken a volunteer position as a Human Resources Administrator at a charity, Millie was advised by a colleague to enrol with MOL.

"It was very simple to see what they were offering and the standard of the textbooks, workshops and the administrative support is brilliant. It was simple to enrol and has been really helpful so far.  I enrolled in September and was able to mention that I had enrolled on a Level 5 programme with MOL at an interview. This led me to being offered a permanent role in December."

Her new role is at an organisation that is expanding rapidly and with only two people in the HR team, her job involves standard HR administration alongside more strategic duties.

“I recently attended a senior manager’s meeting to propose a new HR IT system. My aim is to move into more of an advisory role in the future; however I still have a lot to learn. I do not come from a HR background and it does take time to get to grips with everything.

Studying with MOL has allowed Millie to gain more than just a qualification - it also gives her accreditation:

She added: “I was signed up to begin my HRM Masters in September, but this would not have been accredited by the CIPD. I am really glad I switched to MOL and I will hopefully be able to put 'CIPD Assoc' after my name in six months.”
