Bathrooms - With the wide range of bathroom appliances commercially available today it is important that you are familiar with the variety on offer. This workbook will give you the opportunity to examine the working principles and operating systems of the different appliances and then relate the knowledge you have gained to your own workplace.

Boiler & Replacement Parts - The purpose of this workbook is to enable you to assist customers buying new boilers or requiring items related to the servicing and maintenance of existing appliances. The workbook will consider the most popular boilers and systems, although there are other specialist systems for which the manufacturer's advice may be required.

In this way you will make this workbook relevant to:

  • your own experience
  • the needs of your customers
  • the products which you stock

Central Heating - In this workbook we examine:

  • factors that should be considered before choosing a system
  • the main components of a central heating system
  • the different types available of each of those components
  • the correct and safe way to install the system
  • how to correct problems that may occur in existing central heating systems

Commercial Heating - This workbook will consider all aspects of commercial heating.

Buildings are often classified into two main groups:

  • domestic building which means residential buildings
  • commercial/industrial

There are a number of statutory regulations related to commercial heating. When a system is designed or installed, it is important that the system adheres to the relevant legislation.

Drainage Above Ground - This workbook will consider such products as:

  • rainwater gutters, downpipes and roof outlets
  • soil pipe systems, pipes and fittings
  • waste pipes, fittings and traps
  • overflow warning pipework systems

Plastic Pipes & Components - In this workbook we will examine the main types of plastics used in industrial pipework, their applications and appropriate fittings.

Materials include:

  • polyethylene (PE)
  • unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (cPVC)
  • polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)
  • acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
  • polypropylene (PP)

The various jointing systems used will be considered, as well as other fittings such as brackets. As with any material, plastic needs to be handled with a certain amount of care, handling, transport and storage of plastic pipes will also be examined.

Plumbers Brassware - Brassware is the generic term which refers to all types of:

  • taps
  • valves
  • fittings

commonly used on:

  • sinks
  • washbasins
  • baths
  • bidets

to provide a controlled supply of hot and cold water from a water system.

Underfloor Heating - Almost without exception, dwellings, amenities and business properties of all kinds will be equipped with a means of maintaining a satisfactory working temperature. The majority of older buildings will incorporate some form of central heating and all newly built properties will be similarly equipped.

The quest for ever more efficient and energy saving systems has led to many technological advances, not least in fundamental approaches to the provision of heat emitting systems which are totally unobtrusive in the living or working space. It is this particular aspect of space heating which we will be looking at.

Valves - This workbook will consider common valves and their applications.
