Tomorrow’s World, Today

MOL Learn Magazine Article

Thirty years is a long time. The world in 1984 was a very different place to the world we currently inhabit, and the world in 2044 will be virtually unrecognisable to us today, such is the accelerating pace of change.

Although George Orwell’s vision of a world in perpetual war ruled by formless dictator Big Brother in the novel 1984 may seem to have some parallels with 2014, today’s society enjoys a level of freedom not seen for decades and is steered by economic fluctuations.

Moving forward another three decades and, according to Manchester-based “futurist” Mike Ryan, crowdsourcing will be the main method of raising finance, high street banks will be replaced by their virtual counterparts, motorways will have a lane for driverless cars, and education will become a blend of online and “real world” learning.

That last prediction is rooted in reality. Professional learning provider MOL has been offering a wide range of professional qualifications, including Human Resource Management (HRM) and Learning and Development, for 30 years and specialises in blended learning methods, including study through bespoke workbooks and support through an innovative virtual learning environment.

Bringing the future closer to reality is rarely achieved with monumental leaps in thought and technology, though that does happen; more often it is achieved through change and development. In 30 years MOL has experienced seismic changes in the HRM landscape, from the impact of union power in the 80s, through advances in technology in the 90s, to the impact of the financial crisis of the ‘Noughties’ and its subsequent requirement for businesses of all sizes to restructure and evolve.

These changes have shaped and defined the role of HRM over the past 30 years and MOL has transformed its learning programmes to reflect this, remaining relevant and providing its learners with the skills they need in their workplace as they learn and beyond their qualification into the future.

HRM has to visibly and substantively add value to an organisation, and plays a fundamental role as the “conscience” of any organisation. It also plays a critical role in predicting the needs and challenges an enterprise may face, supporting and driving future organisational change as circumstances determine.

MOL understands these four pillars of HRM and builds them into its programmes, offering access at all levels from Level 3 programmes offering a broad understanding of HR essentials, though Level 4 courses suitable for managers wanting to broaden your skills, Level 5 programmes for managers aiming to develop their careers, Level 7 programmes for those targeting a move to operational or strategic management and onto to a Master’s Degree; the ultimate post-graduate qualification for HR professionals.

The unifying factor between the three decades from 1984 to 2014, and gazing into the future to 2044 is the constant pressure of time on our lives. From waking to a return to sleep time is precious. This situation has always been exacerbated during working hours and this looks likely to remain the case as we hurtle into the middle of this century. MOL understands this and offers flexible learning methods to accommodate busy working lives and the need for time away from the world of work, allowing you to learn, develop and excel at a pace that is achievable.
After 30 years MOL’s evolution is ongoing as it strives to improve and adapt to the world we inherit. With this in mind MOL is rebranding for the future, reflecting the organisation’s diverse and growing offering. MOL launches its new branding on November 5 at ACE with a look at its new website at MOLlearn.com.

Picture yourself in 2044 sitting in a driverless car, talking to your tutor thanks to ubiquitous connectivity while the course materials in your virtual learning environment scroll before you. The future’s not that far away, but who needs a driverless car anyway?
