Meet the Tutor – Ian Potter

Ian brings more than three decades of industry experience to his role.

For example, Ian Potter brings more than three decades of industry experience to his role as a sessional tutor on our Level 3 and 4 Property Agency courses . And as you’ll read, he loves nothing more than helping property professionals towards a successful and rewarding career.

Tell us about your experience in the industry and/or education.

I’ve spent more than thirty years in property related business, initially as an agent, partner in a business and also a director of ARLA. I worked for 8 years with ARLA as Business and Compliance manager, Operations Manager and ultimately as Managing Director. Now, I act as an independent consultant involved in training and specialising in compliance and client accounting.

How and why did you get into teaching?

I was volunteered to make a presentation to letting agents in 1992, and then volunteered again to provide training to other agents, particularly those working towards professional letting qualifications. I became involved in the original ARLA qualifications in 1998 and have remained so in several guises since. I get huge satisfaction from giving others the benefit of my experience, knowledge and understanding of the industry.

Tell us why you're so passionate about your subject area.

It’s the realisation that everyone has to start somewhere on the learning curve, and getting satisfaction from meeting people many years later at events saying: "Thanks for all the help in getting me through that qualification all these years ago.”

I secretly follow people’s careers with satisfaction via social media as well. 

What is the best piece of advice you can give to students who are considering studying a professional qualification?

We all started somewhere and we are all still learning. We all make mistakes but knowledge helps us identify risks and make more balanced decisions.
