What is CIPD Level 5? 

CIPD Level 5 is a mid-level qualification in human resources or learning and development.  

It’s about the equivalent of a foundation degree or HND, and it sits between Level 3 (entry-level) and Level 7 (postgraduate) in the CIPD level framework.

Who is CIPD Level 5 for?

CIPD Level 5 requirements 

There isn’t a set list of entry requirements for CIPD courses, and you don’t necessarily need to complete Level 3 before you start Level 5.  

However; there are things that will be expected from you as a Level 5 CIPD learner, so it’s important to assess your experience and confidence with independent study before you apply. 

Most CIPD Level 5 learners: 

  • Have completed CIPD Level 3, A-levels, or an equivalent qualification 

  • Have a good amount of hands-on HR or L&D experience 

  • Are comfortable reading, writing, and studying independently. 

Is CIPD Level 5 beginner-friendly? 

Not really; CIPD Level 5 will assume you already have some prior knowledge in the field. 

If you’re brand new to HR or have limited experience, starting with CIPD Level 3 foundation certificate might make more sense for you. This course will give you the basics you’ll need to succeed at CIPD Level 5 and beyond.

Completing Level 5 also sets you up for Level 7, the highest-level CIPD course, which is aimed at senior professionals aiming to become strategic HR leaders. 

How long does CIPD Level 5 take?   

How long a CIPD Level 5 course takes will depend on how you choose to study and how much time you can give each week. 

Full-time learners usually finish the course in 12 months. If you’re studying part-time around a job or other commitments, it can take up to 24 months.
