Recruitment – it’s more than just a skills thing

As we all know, making sure you find the right candidate is the key to completing a successful recruitment process, however in today’s workplace, finding someone with the right cultural fit can be just as important as their skill set. After all, on average 50% of our waking hours in any one working day are spent in work, and so we find that our colleagues become in essence, our ‘work family’.

So how can we ensure that the person we offer the job to will slot into our ‘work family’ dynamic? There are a number of techniques you can learn that will give you the skills and know-how to help people feel more comfortable in an interview situation, which will subsequently help them give the best interview they can. If someone feels relaxed in a situation, they will feel more comfortable and you will then be able to get a better impression of who they are and what skills, qualities and potential they have, which in turn will allow you to see if they are a ‘good fit’. One aspect of the CIPD qualification is a workshop dedicated to all aspects of recruitment. This helps HR professionals develop the right techniques and skills to facilitate a successful recruitment and interview process. This will then support them in making the right decision for the team and organisation by choosing the best candidate – someone who has the required job skills and knowledge alongside the right cultural fit.

I have recently completed the recruitment workshop with CIPD, which involved creating an ‘Interview Pack’ and for me this has been great practice to prepare for my next role. I will soon be starting a new role as a Recruitment Consultant and I feel the CIPD course will help me do a more effective job. The ‘Interview Pack’ will be a great way for me to help get the most out of the potential candidates I will be dealing with and putting forward for roles. This has been a really interesting workshop and certainly made me think in more detail about recruitment and finding the right candidate.
